I never, ever planned on being one of those folks who blogged every day, but my recent spate of consistency has led me to wonder if blogging every day is something I am even capable of. I think it might be, but I also love the idea of not touching my laptop between Friday night and Monday morning.
On y va!
🐕🐕 I have shared this certain piece of internet greatness many, many times over the years and it is still where I go when I am having a bad day. I am putting this up top because you will need a palate cleanser later. Make sure your sound is on. (redacted)
🍈🍈 I like ads and advertising a lot more than what would be considered normal. Lately I've been particularly tickled by this weird and lovely Instacart ad that I mostly see on YouTube when my partner and I watch old seasons of Taskmaster. (YouTube/@instacart)
🧙🏽♂️🧙🏽♂️ I've never played Magic: The Gathering, but as I am (very slowly) working on creating a card game with a friend of mine, I have taken it upon myself to learn MTG gameplay, strategy, and tactics via explainers like this one from Tolarian Community College. (YouTube/@TolarianCommunityCollege)
🖼️🎨 Not a NYT subscriber? No stress. I really want you to read this rad piece about/review of a new show at MoMA PS1 about the refuse of consumer society so I'm using one of my gift links. (NYT)
🏀⚾ On Tuesday I posted this week's questions at oddball.blog, my little sports trivia passion project. I just posted the answers. (oddball.blog)
🤖🤖 This last one isn't a fun ad or an explainer. It's a hard read about how a Meta AI chatbot lured a cognitively impaired senior to visit "her" with tragic consequences. In case the story gets taken down, here's the archived capture. (Reuters)
Apologies for ending on a downer, but I think it's important that everyone understands just how Black Mirror-y the present moment is. I have worked in and around AI (on this in 2020, for example) and have many thoughts about it (these, for example), but the main one is that the people making AI products are playing fast and loose with morality and safety because we live in an age that rewards sociopathy.

Be good to yourself (and share that Reuters story far and wide).
I'm out.
